Population 37,468

View Glenrothes on map

Glenrothes was established as a new town on a garden city layout and has evolved into a major administrative and employment hub for Fife. Its economy has transitioned from traditional mining and papermaking to host advanced technology and electronics manufacturing (including Raytheon Systems and Bosch Rexroth), and more recently renewable energy and food processing. As the administrative headquarters for Fife Council, the public sector is also a major source of local employment.

In large towns such as this, this population includes older people, some still in work often in less well paid sectors. It also includes a significant inactive population, some in poorer health. There is a higher proportion of single households and car ownership is lower.

Glenrothes is an interdependent town.

Its most similar towns are Barrhead, Dumbarton, and Largs.
